    Description

    AUSTRALIA 2016
400th ANNIVERSARY OF DIRK HARTOG'S AUSTRALIAN LANDING IN 1616
The Perth Mint has issued this High-Relief Proof Silver Coin in 2016 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Dirk Hartog’s landing in Australia in 1616. Hartog’s arrival here was the first documented European landing in Australia. On his departure he left a pewter plate inscribed with a record of his visit, nailed to a post in a rock cleft on the northernmost end of the cape, now known as the Cape Inscription Area. The plate is the oldest known record of Western Australian history and is now preserved in a museum in Amsterdam.

    The coin’s

high relief reverse and obverse are minted on concave surfaces
to ensure the optimum flow of metal is achieved by the strike of the die.
    The
    obverse
features Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The silver content is 1 troy ounce with the coin struck in High-Relief to proof quality. The coin is presented in a
    prestigious display case
