Power brake boosters can be vacuum or hydraulic. Vacuum boosters use atmospheric pressure to assist with braking. A booster is divided into 2 halves, separated by a rubber diaphragm. Without the brakes applied, there is vacuum, supplied by the engine, on both sides of the diaphragm. When the brake pedal is applied, a valve opens on the firewall side of the booster, allowing atmospheric pressure to enter and push on the diaphragm, which in turn pushes on the master cylinder piston, providing power assist. Hydraulic boosters use the pressure developed by the power steering pump to provide power assist.
Vacuum boosters usually fail because the rubber diaphragm inside is leaking. It can become cracked and worn from age or contaminated, particularly if brake fluid from the master cylinder leaks inside. Other than a defect in the power steering system, hydraulic units can leak or fail internally. Regardless of the type booster, Centric has the replacement that is rebuilt to OE specs, and thoroughly inspected and tested to ensure proper fit and function.
